Headless CMS for Knockout.js

Hygraph is the ideal Headless CMS for Knockout.js websites and applications. Read further to learn how our API-first CMS allows you to add components to your Knockout.js apps in minutes and enable your website's content to be managed from a powerful CMS.

Step #1 - Fetching content from the Headless CMS in Knockout.js

You can use JavaScript's fetch method to send a GraphQL query to a specified endpoint. This is achieved by defining a query string that requests specific fields from the Hygraph's GraphQL server. The fetch request is configured to use the 'POST' method, and headers are set to include 'Content-Type' as 'application/json' and, if necessary, an 'Authorization' token for secure access.

Once the data is successfully fetched and converted to JSON, it's used to update a Knockout.js view model, thereby making the data available for binding in the application's UI.

const headers = {
'Content-Type': 'application/json',
'Authorization': 'Bearer YOUR_HYGRAPH_TOKEN', // if needed
};
// Fetch data from the GraphQL endpoint
fetch('https://api-<region>.hygraph.com/v2/<some hash>/master', {
method: 'POST',
headers: headers,
body: JSON.stringify({ query: query })
})
.then(response => response.json())
.then(data => {
// Update your Knockout.js view model with the fetched data
viewModel.yourData(data.data.yourQuery);
})
.catch(error => console.error('Error fetching data:', error));

Step #2 - Displaying fetched content in Knockout.js

After that, you create a simple HTML structure with a div element, employing Knockout's foreach binding to iterate over an array of data stored in the view model. Inside the loop, we use the text binding to display the value of each field.

This setup is backed by a Knockout.js view model defined in a script tag, where yourData is declared as an observable array. The ko.applyBindings call activates Knockout's data-binding mechanisms, enabling dynamic updates to the UI based on changes to the view model's data.

<!-- HTML template binding with Knockout.js -->
<div data-bind="foreach: yourData">
<div data-bind="text: field1"></div>
<div data-bind="text: field2"></div>
</div>
<script>
// Define your Knockout.js view model
function ViewModel() {
this.yourData = ko.observableArray([]);
}
// Activate Knockout.js bindings
const viewModel = new ViewModel();
ko.applyBindings(viewModel);
</script>

Why Hygraph

Choosing Hygraph for your Knockout.js project

Using a GraphQL-native headless CMS with a Knockout.js application brings clear benefits for both developers and content editors. Developers enjoy the precision and efficiency of GraphQL, which minimizes data fetching issues and enhances app performance. The headless CMS provides a separate, flexible content management system, allowing content editors to

update and manage content independently of the app's technical framework. This setup streamlines workflow and enables content to be easily repurposed across various platforms, significantly boosting productivity and flexibility in content management and application development.
